Over half of employees express discontent with their work; many take sick days frequently
In a recent survey conducted by Appinio between August 11 and 12, 2025, 1,000 working individuals in Germany aged 18 to 67 shared their experiences and thoughts about their jobs. The results paint a picture of job dissatisfaction and the use of sick days, both as a coping mechanism and for personal breaks.
The survey found that approximately 40 percent of respondents reported calling in sick occasionally when they were perfectly healthy. This trend is more prevalent among those who are frustrated with their jobs. In fact, more than half of the dissatisfied employees (58 percent) admitted to using sick days for personal breaks on occasion.
Interestingly, the study also highlighted that 88 percent of those who hate their job think about changing jobs more frequently. However, only about half of all respondents (51 percent) reported thinking about changing jobs at least occasionally.
The survey results also shed light on a concerning trend in outdoor industries. Workers in construction, postal delivery, and certain manual trades in Germany are reporting sick more frequently due to heat-related illnesses like heatstroke, sunstroke, and circulatory problems. Men are disproportionately affected by this trend, and the number of sick reports has increased significantly during heatwaves.
These findings underscore the importance of addressing job satisfaction and heat-related health concerns in the workplace, particularly in outdoor industries. As the climate continues to change, it is crucial for employers to take proactive steps to protect their employees' health and well-being.
