Pablo Rodriguez does not dismiss the possibility of joining the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) party.
Quebec Liberal Party Aims to Stand Out with Bold Ideas for Upcoming Elections
The Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) is making a push to differentiate itself ahead of the next elections, with a focus on original ideas and bold proposals. Pablo Rodriguez, the party's leader, has been actively recruiting candidates and has set a goal of having half of his 125-candidate team constituted by December.
Rodriguez has emphasized the need for the PLQ to "dare, be bold," and propose "quite audacious" ideas. This approach marks a significant departure from the Coalition Avenir Québec's (CAQ) approach, which is characterized by centralization.
One of the proposed audacious ideas is to decentralize health services and open CLSCs (Community Health and Social Services Centres) seven days a week. This would aim to improve accessibility and reduce wait times for Quebecers.
Meanwhile, in the political landscape, the by-election in Saguenay is being held due to the departure of André Laforest. Rodriguez has stated that he will not seek to be elected as a deputy before the general elections in 2026.
In other political developments, François Bonnardel, the Minister of Public Security, has been removed from Legault's Council of Ministers. Bonnardel, however, has assured that he will complete his mandate as a deputy.
Pierre Dufour, a deputy from the Abitibi-Est region, was recently excluded from the CAQ. While there have been reports of his exclusion, as of December 2023, there have been no officially confirmed reports to this effect. It is important to note that Dufour was previously a Minister for Forests, Wildlife, and Parks but stepped down in July 2022 following media reports of a "toxic work environment" in his office.
In the absence of Rodriguez, Marwah Rizqy will lead the PLQ in the National Assembly. Rodriguez has not ruled out recruiting disgruntled CAQ members, including Dufour, should they express interest in joining the PLQ.
