Pacific Ocean Crossing Voyagers from Scotland Reach Pizza Destination by Rowboat
In an incredible feat of endurance and determination, the Scottish brothers Jamie, Ewan, and Lachlan Maclean have completed a charity rowing journey from South America to Australia in record time. The brothers, who hail from the highlands of Scotland, rowed across the Pacific in 139 days, 5 hours, and 52 minutes, beating a previous record set by Russian Fedor Konyukhov.
The journey on their custom-made carbon fiber boat, "Rose Emily," was described by Jamie Maclean (31) as "the most incredible, relentless, and often surreal experience of my life." The brothers had 500 kg of food on board their boat and took turns rowing, with no support boat or resupply present during their journey.
The brothers' arrival was celebrated with family, and upon landing in Cairns, Australia, Jamie expressed a desire for a pizza. Towards the end of the journey, it was tough for the brothers, according to Jamie, but they managed to push harder to finish before their supplies ran out.
The Maclean brothers' rowing journey was a fundraising event for water projects, with the Maclean Foundation, founded by the brothers, aiming to collect £1 million from this event. The foundation supports clean drinking water projects around the world, and the brothers' endeavour was supported by many people who donated to their cause.
Ewan Maclean (33) mentioned that they cried from sadness and fear at times, but the support of people gave them renewed strength. The distance covered by the brothers was nearly 9,000 miles (around 14,484 km), making their achievement even more remarkable.
The previous record for a similar journey was 159 days for 7,393 miles (around 11,898 km) set by Fedor Konyukhov in 2014. Despite the challenges, the Maclean brothers managed to finish their journey within the timeframe of their supplies, making history and raising awareness for a worthy cause.
The Maclean brothers' incredible journey serves as an inspiration to us all, demonstrating the power of determination, teamwork, and the human spirit. We congratulate them on their achievement and wish them continued success in their future endeavours.
