Plex Announces Price Changes and New Features

Plex, the popular self-serve streaming service, has announced upcoming changes to its pricing structure and new features. Starting April 29, the annual cost of the Plex Pass will increase to $70/year, and the monthly Plex Pass price will rise from $5 to $7.

In a bid to fund these changes, Plex is introducing a new Remote Watch Pass tier priced at $2/month or $20/year. This tier will allow users to watch their media library from anywhere, a feature that was previously free. Plex is also charging for remote playback, marking the end of this free service.

However, Plex is not just focusing on revenue generation. The company has announced partnerships with Aardman Animations and Brat to expand its offerings of children and family content. Plex is also planning to bring more parent-focused content as part of its cooperation with Common Sense Media.

In addition, Plex is developing a new app for desktop and mobile users. The company is also working on an open API that pulls in more metadata about what users are watching, aiming to enhance the overall user experience.

The price increase also applies to lifetime subscriptions, which will rise from $120 to $250. However, new users can lock in the current lifetime subscription fee before the price increase.

It's worth noting that other streaming services have also raised their subscription prices recently. A user, for instance, mentioned canceling YouTube TV due to a price hike, switching to ad-supported plans for some networks, and saving money. The user also has three summers worth of YouTube scrapes of the original Real World series in their Plex library and mentions having dozens of shows in their Plex library that they've promised themselves they'd watch.

As Plex continues to evolve and grow, users will have to adapt to the new pricing structure and features. Whether you're a long-time Plex user or considering switching from another service, it's important to weigh the benefits and costs to make an informed decision.
