Pakistan's Initial Skatepark Emerges as a Prominent Unifier
In the heart of Lahore, Pakistan, lies a unique haven that has become a beacon of hope and unity for people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. This oasis is none other than the first public skatepark in the country, located in Lawrence Gardens.
Founded by the nonprofit organisation Skate Pakistan in the spring of 2023, the skatepark was born out of a need for a space where people could escape the city's traffic-choked streets and find solace. The initiative was aided by professional skateboarders Kenny Reed and Nestor Judkins, the volunteer group Salad Days of Skateboarding, and the nonprofit Wonders Around the World.
Pakistan, a country vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, has seen its traditional childhood activities like swimming and street cricket dwindle due to the Ravi River drying up and the Nehr Canal becoming too polluted to enter. Against this backdrop, Skate Pakistan has emerged as a rare refuge, offering an alternative form of recreation that transcends social and economic barriers.
Skateboarding, a sport that requires no special equipment or facilities, has proven to be a rare equalizer in Pakistan, where identity is often tied to caste and status. At the skatepark, everyone is equal on their skateboards, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.
The skatepark has grown into a vibrant, lasting community in just two years. As part of the membership community, one can enjoy the benefits of a complimentary subscription to Atmos Magazine, while also supporting the work of the skatepark.
Join us at the skatepark in Lawrence Gardens, Lahore, and experience the transformative power of skateboarding in a country where it has become more than just a sport – it's a way of life.
