New Palace Store in Seoul Celebrates Southbank's Brutalist Architecture

Get ready, skateboarding enthusiasts and fashion aficionados! A new Palace store is set to open in Seoul on the 8th of February, 2025. This exciting development is a collaboration between British skatewear brand Palace and designer Steve Oh, and it promises to be a unique retail experience that celebrates the Southbank Centre in London.

The founders of Palace, Gareth Skewis and Lev Tanju, spent much of their formative years skateboarding in the Southbank Centre. It's no surprise, then, that this iconic complex serves as the spiritual home of the brand. The new store in Seoul aims to recreate the essence of Southbank, with designer Steve Oh capturing its brutalist architecture in the store design.

The store design is a fascinating blend of brutalism and luxury. Concrete pillars and ceilings contrast with a gleaming grey marble floor, while monolithic slabs of red marble recreate Southbank's block-like benches. A totemic 'English bulldog sculpture' and a 'P'-shape light in Palace's signature slanted font add to the store's distinctive character.

Steve Oh, who previously worked in the research and development team at Google ATAP and founded design agency OSTVO in 2023, finds the partnership with Palace rewarding due to the freedom to experiment and have fun with the process. He believes the store design encourages creativity and challenges the norms of retail.

Lev Tanju expresses fondness for Seoul, citing the food, people, and skate scene as reasons. Gareth Skewis shares Tanju's appreciation for Seoul's skate scene, describing it as unique and unlike any other place he's ever been.

The new store covers an area larger than the first Palace outpost in Seoul, which opened in the Apgujeong district in February 2024. Palace Seoul is located at 30, Hongik-ro 5-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul.

For those who appreciate skate culture, British fashion, and innovative design, the new Palace store in Seoul is a must-visit destination. So mark your calendars for the 8th of February, 2025, and get ready to experience the unique fusion of Southbank's brutalist architecture and luxury design in the heart of Seoul.
