Palmer finds no clear victor following debate with the AfD leader.
Tübingen's Mayor Boris Palmer has admitted self-criticism following a debate with the AfD state leader, Markus Frohnmaier, on Friday evening. During the discussion, Palmer expressed regret over not highlighting Frohnmaier's evasive maneuvers and retreat from right-wing extremist contents.
Despite the unfavourable debate conditions, including a heated atmosphere, delays, lack of time, and his own hoarse voice, Palmer was positive about the part of the debate that dealt with crime statistics. He believes he exposed the AfD by showing that they made fewer excited interruptions during this section of the debate, according to Palmer.
The discussion about crime statistics was particularly significant as it revealed that the number of criminal offenses in Tübingen has decreased over the past two decades. In the year 2000, the number stood at 6.3 million, but last year, it dropped to 5.5 million. This decrease also applied to serious crimes, including murder and manslaughter, which were also 5.5 million last year.
Palmer, however, believes he could have made it clearer that he does not simply believe everything and that it contradicts other statements. He emphasised that who wasn't afraid on the streets 20 years ago, doesn't have to be afraid today.
Despite the self-criticism, Palmer maintains his belief in the importance of engaging with political opponents as the main way to success. He continues to advocate for open and honest discussions on crucial issues affecting Tübingen and its residents.
As of Monday, August 30, no search result explicitly identified the politician who conducted a critical self-reflection after the debate with the AfD faction leader in Tübingen. However, it is clear that Palmer was the one expressing self-criticism and sharing his thoughts on the debate and its outcomes.
