Paris-based Art Basel Director, Clément Delépine, steps down from his position to take up a new role at Lafayette Anticipations.
After a successful tenure at Art Basel Paris, Clemént Delepine has announced his departure to pursue a new personal and professional challenge. Delepine, who was named the director of Art Basel Paris in March 2022, expressed gratitude for his time leading the esteemed fair and admiration for Lafayette Anticipations' previous director, Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel.
Lafayette Anticipations, a Paris exhibition space known for its ambitious exhibition program featuring international artists, has a new director: Clemént Delepine. The organization, a nonprofit foundation for the iconic department store Galeries Lafayette, operates out of a 19th-century industrial building in Le Marais, which opened in 2018 after a renovation by Rem Koolhaas and OMA.
Delepine's departure from Art Basel Paris comes as a search for a new director is currently underway. Vincenzo de Bellis, the Chief Artistic Officer of Art Basel, will take over the search temporarily following Delepine's departure.
Delepine's career in the arts has been marked by a series of notable positions. Prior to his time at Art Basel Paris, he led Paris Internationale, an independent fair, from 2016 to 2021. Delepine also previously worked as a director in New York's Bortolami Gallery and at the Swiss Institute, also in New York.
Art Basel CEO Noah Horowitz congratulated Delepine on his appointment at Lafayette Anticipations and expressed continued focus on delivering for their clients on a global basis. Guillaume Houzé, the president of Lafayette Anticipations and the great-grandson of one of Galeries Lafayette's founders, expressed gratitude for Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel's work and welcomed Clemént Delepine's arrival as the start of a new chapter for Lafayette Anticipations.
Many of Paris's top institutions mount their most important shows when Art Basel Paris opens. The timing of Art Basel Paris in mid-October might be a factor in why some of its ambitions never quite panned out. However, recent shows at Lafayette Anticipations have been dedicated to Martine Syms, Issy Wood, Cyprien Gaillard, Martin Margiela, and Wu Tsang, indicating a strong commitment to showcasing innovative and thought-provoking art.
Delepine feels fortunate to join Lafayette Anticipations and looks forward to affirming its unique position on the French and international art scene. Clemént Delepine will start his role at Lafayette Anticipations on November 17, 2023.
Art Basel Paris was launched after nabbing the October dates at the Grand Palais from longtime French fair, FIAC. The name of Art Basel Paris's new fair was initially "Paris+, par Art Basel" but has since been ditched. The search for a new director for Art Basel Paris will no doubt be a hot topic in the art world as the fair continues to establish itself as a major player in the global art scene.
