Parliament in Europe passes resolution regarding the state of affairs in the ex-Yugoslavia region.
In a turn of events, Nikolaus Kramer, the AfD faction leader in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's state parliament, has found himself embroiled in a controversy, with his ties to a student fraternity coming under scrutiny. Kramer, who is a member of the Markomannia Aachen Greifswald fraternity, also previously served as the chief of staff of Philipp Amthor, Secretary of State of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
The controversy began when Kramer publicly criticised the approach of left-wing opinion-makers and their political allies. He accused them of using defamations, dramatizations, and obvious untruths in their criticism. Kramer's comments came in response to the left's criticism of the CDU's cooperation with right-wing populists in local politics.
Amthor's chief of staff, who also shares Kramer's fraternity membership, recently left the fraternity in response to the criticism. Amthor himself has spoken out against the association of right-wing extremists like Martin Sellner with polite society. He finds it unacceptable if such groups make extremists acceptable in society.
Amthor, however, has rejected calls for his resignation from the Left party's state leader Hennis Herbst. Hennis Herbst's demand was based on a report in the left-wing daily newspaper taz regarding the issue. Amthor stated that his chief of staff's departure was the consequence of a longer-term development of the association and a longer and personal weighing process.
Kramer, in his defence, pointed out that many CDU members, including Konrad Adenauer, Kurt Georg Kiesinger, and Friedrich Merz, are or were members of student fraternities. He questioned where we live when politicians and journalists appoint themselves as ideological guardians and conduct background checks on biographies and affiliations.
The controversy has led some political voices to predict the collapse of the firewall between the AfD and the CDU on a nationwide level by 2026. However, Kramer emphasized that many leftists are losing support among the population due to their self-proclaimed role as the moral vanguard. He further criticised the left's solidarity with left-wing extremist violent criminals, stating that it further distances people with decency and common sense.
Despite the controversy, the search results do not provide the names of CDU politicians, besides Nikolaus Kramer, who are members of the student fraternities Gothia and Ernst Moritz Arndt Greifswald. The cooperation between Christian Democrats and right-wing populists in local politics continues, with Sellner giving a lecture in the house of the fraternity in 2019. The issue of fraternity ties and cooperation between political parties remains a contentious topic in German politics.
