Cebu City Council Pushes for Rumble Strips to Improve Road Safety

In a bid to address the alarming increase in vehicular accidents in Cebu City, the local council has introduced a motion calling for the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) to install rumble strips on national roads within the city.

The motion, filed by Councilor Jose Lorenzo Abellanosa, was seconded by Councilor Paul Labra. According to the resolution, the installation of rumble strips is a new initiative aimed at reducing vehicular accidents and improving road safety in Cebu City.

Rumble strips are raised or milled indentations on the road surface that produce vibrations and a distinct noise when a vehicle drives over them. They are intended to force drivers to slow down, especially in areas where people are crossing.

The push for rumble strips comes as Cebu City is experiencing an average of 24 accidents daily, with a significant increase in those involving pedestrians. From January to March 2023, the city recorded 2,132 vehicular accidents and traffic violations, a 148% increase from the same period in 2022.

The resolution emphasizes that pedestrian lanes alone do not guarantee safety for pedestrians. The installation of rumble strips, therefore, is meant to improve pedestrian safety in Cebu City.

The City Council is calling on the CCTO to put up additional rumble strips on all major roads, especially before pedestrian lanes. The CCTO is being urged to coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Highways for the installation of rumble strips on national roads within Cebu City.

The CCTO is being urged to take action in response to the alarming increase in road accidents in Cebu City. The installation of rumble strips is considered a proven safety feature, and their implementation is intended to compel drivers to slow down and be more cautious when approaching crosswalks, thereby preventing accidents.

In recent months, Cebu City has taken steps to address its road safety issues. For instance, grass strips have been placed to improve pedestrian paths and reduce vehicle speed. The latest action by the City Council is a motion to coordinate with the CCTO and the Department of Public Works and Highways for the installation of rumble strips on national roads within Cebu City.

The installation of rumble strips is intended to avoid unnecessary accidents and improve overall road safety in Cebu City. The City Council hopes that this initiative will help make the city's roads safer for both drivers and pedestrians.
