Peek inside: A showcase of hidden spaces!
Erika Harzer has transformed her closet into an efficient and stylish space, using the Konmari folding method and a capsule wardrobe.
The closet houses a capsule wardrobe, with a shelf for jeans, a clothing rod, and two shelves for shoes. There's also room for a laundry basket. Fresh lavender satchels are kept inside the storage bins to repel moths.
Tomorrow marks the end of capsule week, and Erika will be discussing the capsule FAQ, including how to make a capsule work when the weather is all over the place.
One drawer in particular is dedicated to home life clothes, which are a step up from PJ's or loungewear and can be worn for activities like cleaning or yard work. The chest of drawers, from IKEA, has survived multiple moves and is kept organized with Skubb drawer cubes and the Konmari folding method.
Off season clothes are stored in two medium sized plastic bins and are kept accessible by storing them in the closet next door. Three canvas bins are on the top shelf of the closet, holding random athletic gear and seasonal accessories.
The garment rack serves as a seasonal transition area, laundry drying station, packing spot, and purchase decision spot. A bamboo garment rack, which can be found on Amazon for $45, is mentioned as a possible alternative.
The folding louvre doors in the closet are original to the house and are a favourite feature. The closet, clothing rod, doors, and top shelf were existing, and four extra shelves were added to customize it. The total cost was approximately $40 for particle board and L-brackets.
Wooden hangers from IKEA are used for most items, with a few velvet hangers for camisoles or tanks. Hanging clothes are organized by colour and type, with dresses on one side, outer layers on the other side, and tops in the middle. Delicate knit items are either folded over hangers or stored on the shelf above the shoes.
The home life drawer contains clothes sourced from earlier capsules and helps to repurpose and extend the life of older clothes. Keeping a home life drawer also helps to prevent nicer capsule clothes from getting worn out prematurely.
A visible location is kept for a recently ordered item (the pink tee) to make a decision on it. Erika plans to give a (much shorter) closet tour each season to show changes.
Other garment rack options with different designs are provided: a minimalist design for $189, an industrial style for $60, a modern white rack for $98, and a cool open wardrobe for $99.
