Persisting Drought Leaves Canals Smelling Bad - City Depends on Rainfall for Relief

The city of Solingen, Germany, has been grappling with an unpleasant sewer odor for several days now. The cause of this problem, according to experts, is a prolonged drought that has caused the sewer system to carry less water and waste to decompose, resulting in the production of foul gases.

These gases, which are usually transported away by the flow of water in the sewer system, are instead rising through manholes and polluting the air. The odor is so potent that it's been compared to standing next to a wastewater treatment plant.

City officials are closely monitoring the situation and are hopeful for rain, as showers could increase the water level in the sewer system and help flush the pipes. A city spokesperson stated that a few heavy showers could significantly improve the current situation.

If rain does not occur, emergency flushing could be an option to address the odor issue in the sewer system. Meanwhile, some residents are also noticing the odor in their homes. If the trap in a home dries out due to infrequent use or heat, gases can rise and cause the odor.

Many Solingen residents are not just waiting for a cool-down, but also for rain that will make the air breathable again. Recently, Berlin and Brandenburg in Germany have also been noted for similar issues, attributed to prolonged dry periods causing low water flow, which worsens odor issues. Forecasts indicate some rain in coming days that could improve flow conditions and reduce odors in these systems.

Experts have reported this issue on the city's website, urging residents to take precautions and to report any unusual odors. The city is working diligently to resolve the issue and ensure the health and comfort of its residents.
