Pest control finds its peak as wasp swarms and rodent invasions pose challenges

In the current warm and humid summer, pests such as ants, cockroaches, rats, and others are thriving across Germany. This surge in pest activity has been particularly noticeable in the Heilbronn-Franken region, where rat infestations have been a persistent problem.

Since 2020, pest controllers have been dealing with a stronger rat infestation in the region. Johann Ekov, a pest controller with over 15 years of experience, has been at the forefront of managing these infestations. His company, "Ekov Schädlingsbekämpfung," is a member of the registered association "German Pest Control Association."

Ekov's motto is: "Infestation can happen to anyone." He has carried out cockroach and rat control in some of the best houses in the region. Cockroaches, specifically the German cockroach, are a particular concern during this wet summer. These pests thrive in moist, dark places and are a problem not just in the Heilbronn-Franken region, but across Germany.

The use of snap traps and rat poison from the hardware store is not a solution due to potential resistance in the animals. Instead, professional pest controllers can quickly bring rat infestations under control with strongly dosed poison baits. However, new restrictions have made the use of poison baits in the sewer system ineffective, and only "high-security boxes" can be used instead.

Prevention measures are often ineffective against rat infestations, and climate change and decreasing green spaces in cities contribute to more rats on the streets. Werner Steinheuser, chairman of the Pest Control Association West, finds prevention measures challenging due to these new restrictions.

Pest controllers remove at least ten wasp nests in a typical summer week. Wasp nests are protected by species and may not be removed without permission from the responsible nature conservation authority. Fines of up to 50,000 euros can be imposed for removing a wasp nest without permission in Baden-Württemberg.

Regular visits from a pest controller for prevention can help detect cockroach infestations early in businesses. This is particularly important as cockroaches can carry diseases and cause health issues.

In conclusion, the current summer conditions have led to a surge in pest activity across Germany. Pest controllers are reporting consistently high numbers of cases, and it is important for homeowners and businesses to take preventative measures and seek professional help when necessary.
