Pharmacy Health Services under Fire: Controversy Reigns

Drugstore chain dm has recently introduced new health services in select stores and online. The services, which include eye screenings and skin analysis, have sparked a wave of criticism from medical associations.

According to Sebastian Bayer, dm's business manager for marketing and procurement, a portion of these services are carried out by specialist physicians. For instance, the examination of retinal images for abnormalities is done in collaboration with partner companies and the Düsseldorf-based startup "Skleo Health." Skleo Health provides AI-supported screening for early detection of eye diseases. The screenings are performed by specially trained dm employees, with results validated by ophthalmology specialists affiliated with Skleo Health.

However, the German professional associations of ophthalmologists and dermatologists have published critical statements regarding dm's health services. The ophthalmologists question the professional standards of dm's eye screening services, while the dermatologists express concerns about potential confusion from incorrect findings in dm's skin analysis service.

The associations also criticise the advertising aspect of dm's health services. They argue that the marketing claims of relieving the healthcare system are unlikely to be fulfilled. Furthermore, they point out that there could be issues with local shortages in dermatology or ophthalmology practices if treatment is needed.

The statements warn of potential risks and complications arising from incorrect findings in dm's health services. For example, only an examination by an ophthalmologist can provide clarity when customers receive abnormal results from dm's eye screening services.

Customers should be aware that while these services can provide recommendations for skincare and suitable products, they do not offer medical treatment. In the case of the skin analysis service, it uses artificial intelligence but is not a medical examination or diagnosis, according to Sebastian Bayer.

The criticisms suggest that dm's health services could potentially lead to more demand for professional medical services, indicating a concern about the potential impact on the healthcare system and professional practices. The German Association of Ophthalmologists has further stated that these health services offered by dm are facing criticism from medical associations.

As the debate continues, it is essential to maintain a clear understanding of the limitations and potential risks associated with these new health services offered by dm.
