PISA Math Results Analyzed by Sal Khan: Key Insights Revealed
==================================================================================
Salman (Sal) Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, has expressed concerns about the emphasis on small changes in PISA scores, suggesting they distract from the larger long-term issues with math education in the U.S.
Khan believes that the PISA results are more nuanced than some alarmist reactions suggest. He argues that comparing the U.S. to large, diverse countries is not entirely fair. In the PISA 2022 results, the U.S. held steady in reading and science, but there was a 13-point drop in math scores for 15-year-old students compared to 2018.
The percentage of kids in Detroit who are at grade level or above in math has dropped from 6% pre-pandemic to 3% post-pandemic. This troubling trend is not unique to Detroit, as many college students in the U.S. have to take remedial math, despite having taken Algebra 1, Algebra 2, trigonometry, and calculus during their school years. Sal Khan refers to remedial math as a euphemism for seventh-grade math.
However, Khan is not all doom and gloom. He has data to back up the power of Khan Academy to help students. At Khan Lab School and Khan World School, where students use Khan Academy for 30 minutes daily, there is a two-grade-level acceleration annually. Using a learning platform like Khan Academy a little bit every week can accelerate students' math skills by 20% to 80%, depending on the grade level (broadly speaking, around 30%).
Khan predicts results similar to the PISA math results for U.S. students. He encourages educators and parents to take advantage of resources like Khan Academy, believing that doing so will lead to math success. If students learned college algebra by the 12th grade, it would be transformative, according to Khan.
Khan compares the focus on PISA results to realizing that a house is on fire while only noticing a creaking sliding door. He suggests that if the U.S. focused on effective, evidence-based methods for teaching math, such as those utilised by Khan Academy, it could significantly improve math education in the country.
In recent years, countries such as China, Singapore, and some East Asian nations have significantly closed the performance gap in mathematics compared to the USA, while some traditional Western countries have seen relatively less progress or even a decline in comparative standing. This trend is evident in international assessments like PISA, where these countries consistently outperform the US in math achievement.
Despite not receiving additional payment if more people use Khan Academy, Khan remains dedicated to improving math education in the U.S. and beyond. He believes that there are pockets in the U.S., such as Massachusetts, that would be near the top of the math achievement ranking if they were independent countries. Khan's mission is to ensure that every student has access to quality math education, regardless of their location or economic status.
