Plans for a new Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Biju Patnaik International Airport underway
Odisha is set to make a significant stride in India's aviation industry with the establishment of a state-of-the-art maintenance facility at Bhubaneswar's Biju Patnaik International Airport. The development, in collaboration with the GMR Group, is expected to strengthen regional connectivity and create skilled employment opportunities in aviation engineering.
The GMR Group, a leading player in the infrastructure sector, is India's oldest independent MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) provider. The new facility is anticipated to improve operational reliability in the region, addressing higher costs and operational delays due to limited local maintenance capacity.
The entry of Odisha into India's MRO sector is primarily driven by air traffic growth and state-level backing. The state government is also investing in new airports and helipads as part of an integrated aviation ecosystem. This investment in infrastructure is expected to cut ferry and downtime costs for operators, making Odisha a strategic location within the eastern aviation corridor.
The Government of Odisha is partnering with Air Works Group, India's oldest independent MRO provider, to establish this modern maintenance hub. The partnership is expected to create numerous job opportunities in aviation engineering, contributing to the skill development of the local workforce.
In addition to the maintenance facility, Odisha is also implementing cadet pilot and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) training programs. These initiatives aim to further bolster the state's position in the aviation industry and contribute to the rebalancing of India's aviation value chain.
The announcement of this development was first shared via the MRO Association of India's LinkedIn page, signifying the industry's recognition of Odisha's potential in the aviation sector.
