Platform Introduces Communication Feature for Sharing Songs and More with Friends and Kin
Spotify, the popular music streaming platform, has recently introduced a new feature called Messages. This innovative addition allows users to share their favourite songs, playlists, podcasts, or albums directly within the app.
The Messages feature is designed to facilitate organic content promotion for artists, authors, and creators, potentially driving discovery without the need for traditional advertising investment. It creates one-on-one conversations where users can share Spotify content, respond with text messages, and even emoji reactions.
To access Messages, users simply need to look for the user profile photos in the top left corner of the Spotify application. From there, they can initiate messages through the Now Playing View by tapping the share icon, selecting a recipient, and sending content directly within the application.
Spotify has implemented real-time messaging capabilities, content attachment systems, and cross-platform synchronization to ensure a seamless user experience, regardless of the device being used. The messaging system operates through existing social connections within Spotify's ecosystem.
For the safety and well-being of its users, Spotify utilizes proactive detection technology to scan messages for unlawful and harmful content. Human moderators are also on standby to review reported material. The expansion of Messages to additional global users is planned for the coming months.
Messages content is protected by industry-standard encryption for data protection both in transit and at rest. The encryption specifications ensure message privacy while enabling content moderation, balancing user protection with platform safety requirements.
The Messages feature is currently available for Free and Premium users aged 16 years and older in select markets on mobile devices. It was first launched on August 26, 2025, initially in selected countries, although the specific countries chosen for this initial rollout were not publicly disclosed.
It's important to note that users can accept or decline message requests, and the platform's existing Terms of Use and Platform Rules apply to Messages content. This ensures a fair and respectful environment for all users.
In essence, the Messages feature aims to capture and enhance organic sharing behaviours by providing dedicated conversation spaces within Spotify's broader content recommendation ecosystem. This new addition is set to revolutionise the way users interact and discover new content on the platform.
