Police detained a man from Sabah following controversial Facebook posts that threatened a forensic pathologist involved in the investigation of Zara Qairina's death.
A 61-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly issuing death threats on Facebook in connection with the ongoing inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, a Form One student who passed away on July 17 following a predawn fall at her school hostel.
The suspect was arrested at the Semporna district police headquarters, with his mobile phone seized during the arrest. The threats were posted on a Facebook account under the name "Amung Kamaruddin", and initial checks confirmed that the suspect was the owner of the account.
The threats were directed at a forensic pathologist named Dr Jessie Hiu, who testified in the investigation of Zara's death. The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Sessions Court judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan is acting as the coroner for the inquest, and a total of 68 witnesses, including minors, police officers, teachers, and other experts, are scheduled to testify.
The inquest into Zara's death began on September 3 at the Coroner's Court in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The inquest resumes on Monday.
Jauteh, the Sabah police commissioner, reminded the public to be responsible on social media, stating, "We urge the public to refrain from making such threats or spreading misinformation, as it can lead to serious consequences."
The man's arrest is not the first time such an incident has occurred in relation to the inquest into Zara's death. The inquest is being held following allegations of bullying, and the case involving the death threats is part of a larger investigation into the circumstances surrounding Zara's death.
The inquest is an important step in seeking the truth about what happened to Zara, and it is crucial that all parties involved, including the public, act responsibly and respectfully throughout the process.
