Police in Rostock award five individuals for exceptional acts of civilian bravery
In the heart of Rostock, acts of courage and selflessness have been celebrated, as the city's Police Inspectorate honoured five individuals for their exceptional interventions in challenging situations.
The ceremony, held some time after a series of remarkable events, served as a platform for the community to learn about the tasks of the Rostock Police Inspectorate and to pay tribute to those who went above and beyond.
On December 10, 2024, a traffic accident occurred in Rostock Südstadt involving 17-year-old Darion Heller and a Ford Focus. Darion was tragically trapped under the car, sustaining injuries. However, three first responders managed to free him and provide medical care before the arrival of rescue services. Darion and his mother Yvonn Heller attended the award ceremony to honour these heroes.
One of the first responders was Sophie Gerlach, an educator at a neighbouring kindergarten, who acted as a first aider during the accident. Another was Toby Peters, a 15-year-old who displayed civil courage by engaging a suspected thief in conversation, allowing the police to catch the man red-handed.
Meanwhile, in a different part of the city, 25-year-old Anna Soiko, a visitor from Würzburg, found a five-year-old autistic boy named Ahmed alone by the edge of a pond in Fischerdorf on May 11, 2024. Ahmed had inexplicably wandered off and found himself in danger. Without hesitation, Anna saved Ahmed by pulling him out of the pond to safety. Ahmed was later handed over to his relieved mother.
The honorees were recognised for their determined and exemplary commitment. Alongside Anna Soiko, Toby Peters, and the unnamed heroes who saved Darion Heller, Anna Soiko was also among the five individuals honoured for their acts of bravery.
Since 2024, the Rostock Police Inspectorate has been honouring individuals with the "Award for Civil Courage". The recipients of this award serve as a reminder that acts of kindness and bravery can make a significant difference in the lives of others.
In the aftermath of the accident, Darion Heller has largely recovered, and Toby Peters has become more observant of his surroundings. These stories of courage and resilience serve as a testament to the power of community spirit and the human capacity for kindness in the face of adversity.
