Police issue renewed warnings on cryptocurrency investments due to persistent fraud risks

In a concerning development, the Police Headquarters Neubrandenburg has reported several fraud cases involving internet investments in the districts of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte and Vorpommern-Greifswald. The fraud reports were filed on 26.08.2025 at police stations in Demmin, Greifswald, and Pasewalk.

The perpetrators, who typically contacted victims via email, WhatsApp, or phone calls, falsely advertised or promised investments in cryptocurrencies. In some cases, they even used well-known political figures to create trust with the users.

Johanna Liebich, the press officer of the Neubrandenburg Police Directorate, has emphasised the importance of caution when dealing with personal data and online advertisements. She advises consulting a bank for investment possibilities and encourages vigilance in all internet transactions due to the high risks associated with unverified platform authenticity.

In none of the three cases did a withdrawal occur. However, a total damage of 73,000 euros was caused by these reported incidents. In one case, the fraudsters demanded the victim's ID to open an alleged foreign account. After the victim made a large money transfer to the foreign account, the contact with the perpetrators was cut off.

Further payment demands would follow, usually justified by the need to make an alleged withdrawal possible. Initially, a sum of around 200 euros was demanded to be paid into a designated account.

The police reiterate their warnings against fraud schemes involving internet investments and urge the public to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

For inquiries, the Police Headquarters Neubrandenburg Press Office can be contacted at Johanna Liebich, telephone: 0395/5582-5007, email: [email protected], or visit their website at http://www.polizei.mvnet.de.

Stay safe and be vigilant when dealing with online transactions.
