Police force proposal lowers minimum recruitment age to 16 years, according to SPD. - Police Proposal to Lower Minimum Recruiting Age for Officers to 16 Years Old
In a recent move, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Bavaria has presented several proposals aimed at reforming the recruitment and retirement policies for the Bavarian police force.
One of the key proposals is lowering the minimum age for applicants to the Bavarian police from 17 to 16 years. Faction leader Holger Grießhammer argues that this change would allow graduates of secondary schools to start police training immediately, thereby addressing the issue of competition for the best police officers.
The SPD also advocates for harmonising the entry age with other federal states, such as Brandenburg, Bremen, and Bavaria, where the minimum age is already 16 years. This, they believe, will put Bavaria on equal footing in the competition for the best police officers.
In addition to recruitment reforms, the SPD is pushing for improvements in the welfare of police dogs and their handlers. Christiane Feichtmeier, a member of the SPD, has emphasised the need to feed police dogs and the many sacrifices their handlers make for them. As a result, the SPD is advocating for an increase in the food and care allowance for police dog handlers to at least 110 euros per month, up from the current 87 euros.
The SPD is also arguing for retirement contracts for retired police horses and their previous caretakers. Currently, in the case of police dogs, the Free State enters into retirement contracts with the previous caretakers. However, in the case of police horses, this is not always the case, with many former caretakers continuing to care for retired horses at their own expense. The SPD believes that if police officers are willing to care for retired animals, the Free State should also support them.
Lastly, the SPD motion states that maintaining a high level in the Bavarian police career and counteracting the general shortage of skilled workers requires allowing the most suitable young people to find their way into the Bavarian police career. To this end, they have submitted a motion to the state parliament seeking cross-factional support for this change.
The SPD's proposals aim to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for both police officers and their animals, while also ensuring that the Bavarian police force remains competitive in the recruitment of the best and brightest.
