Thailand's Upcoming Cabinet Line-up Takes Shape

Thailand's political landscape is gearing up for a significant change as the country prepares for a new cabinet under the Bhumjaithai-led government. Here's a look at the anticipated appointments and key positions:

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Legal Affairs

Borwornsak Uwanno, a legal scholar and former chairman of the 2015 constitution drafting committee, has been appointed as deputy prime minister overseeing legal affairs. Uwanno brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as former dean of Chulalongkorn University's law faculty, secretary-general to the cabinet, and a member of the 1996 constitution drafting assembly, among other posts.

Minister of Defence

The defence minister post is expected to be filled by an outsider, with Gen Supot Malaniyom, a former National Security Council (NSC) secretary-general under the Prayut administration, strongly tipped for the position. The appointment is part of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's intention to bring in respected outsiders to the cabinet.

Minister of Finance

Ekniti Nitithanprapas, the current Director-General of the Ministry of Finance, is likely to take on the role of finance minister in the Bhumjaithai-led government.

PM's Office Minister

Bhumjaithai MP Paradorn Prissanananthakul is expected to be named the PM's Office Minister. However, Prissanananthakul has declined to discuss whether he had earned a cabinet post.

Foreign Affairs Minister

Sihasak Phuangketkeow is tipped to take on the foreign affairs post. Phuangketkeow is an experienced diplomat who has served as Thailand's ambassador to the United States and the United Nations.

Energy Minister

Auttapol Rerkpiboon, a well-known figure in Thailand's energy sector, is expected to be appointed as the energy minister.

Deputy Finance Minister

Vorapak Tanyawong has been tipped to be the new deputy finance minister.

Justice Minister

The justice portfolio is under speculation, with Pol Lt Gen Charnchai Pongpichit and Pol Lt Gen Rutthapol Naowarat being potential candidates.

Commerce Minister

Suphajee Suthumpun, Group CEO at Dusit Thani Plc, has been approached for the post of commerce minister.

Cabinet Line-up Finalisation

The cabinet line-up is expected to be finalised soon, with Gen Prawit Wongsuwon, the leader of the Palang Pracharath Party, denying any position in the cabinet. There have been reports about jostling between the Palang Pracharath Party and the Klatham Party over the defence minister post, with the Palang Pracharath Party reportedly eyeing the position for former defence permanent secretary Gen Nat Intaracharoen, while the Klatham Party wanted it for chief adviser Capt Thamanat Prompow.

Economic Stimulus Policy

Meanwhile, the Bhumjaithai party is drafting an economic stimulus policy under a 120-day framework, focusing on short-term measures such as debt suspension for farmers, fertiliser price reductions, and targeted relief programs for businesses and residents in the seven border provinces.

Flat Fare for Electric Trains

A 20-baht flat fare for electric trains might not be implemented on time due to pending House approval for linked bills.

In conclusion, the upcoming cabinet promises a mix of experienced politicians and respected outsiders, with a focus on addressing national issues and implementing an economic stimulus policy to support the Thai economy.
