Politics in Bavaria takes a gastronomical turn with Markus Söder at the helm, emphasizing food-related policies.
Markus Soeder, born in 1967 in Nuremberg, Bavaria, has been a prominent figure in German politics for several decades. After completing his law studies, Soeder began his career as a journalist for the Bavarian state broadcaster BR.
In 1995, Soeder joined the Christian Social Union (CSU) and led the CDU/CSU's national youth organization, the Junge Union, until 2003. His political career took off, and he held various roles within the CSU, including serving as the party's general secretary and minister for federal and European affairs, minister for environment and health, and finance minister in the cabinet of State Premier Horst Seehofer.
In 2018, Soeder became the state premier of Bavaria, a position he still holds today. Known for his breezy, affable political style, Soeder is a stark contrast to more reserved German political leaders. This style has been both a strength and a point of criticism, with some peers viewing it as too populist.
Soeder's public image has been further solidified through his appearances on various merchandise, such as giant Easter eggs, Christmas Lebkuchen, and a logo promoting Bavaria's space program. His sausage-eating antics have also made headlines, prompting criticism from his peers.
In the 2021 general election, Soeder ran for the joint chancellor candidate of the CDU against the Social Democrats' Olaf Scholz. Although he did not secure the position, Soeder's ambitions for the chancellery seem to be dormant now, and he has stressed that his loyalties are to Bavaria.
The CSU, led by Soeder, gained only 37% at the last state election in 2023. Despite this loss, the CSU was able to claim several victories in recent federal coalition negotiations. Soeder's dominance over the CSU is such that his deputies and ministers have little national profile.
Soeder's social media accounts have capitalized on his breezy style, including a popular #Soederisst hashtag. His speeches often feature off-the-cuff personal anecdotes, adding a relatable touch to his public image.
Despite the occasional criticism, Soeder's relationship with Chancellor Friedrich Merz has been cordial. As the commanding political presence in one of Germany's richest states, Soeder continues to shape Bavaria's political landscape.
