Pool in Midlakes resumes operation following substantial renovations
Midlakes Aquatic Center Reopens After Extensive Renovations
The Midlakes Aquatic Center, a beloved community hub in Phelps-Clifton Springs, has reopened its doors following months of major renovations. The pool, which closed in February, has undergone significant upgrades to improve accessibility, update locker rooms, and modernize the pool area.
The renovations addressed failing equipment and deteriorating conditions, including resurfacing the entire pool, replacing corroded air-handling systems, installing a new dehumidification unit, upgrading the filtration system, and installing new starting blocks.
The reopening of the Midlakes Aquatic Center is a cause for celebration, and the Phelps-Clifton Springs Central School District has planned a home swim meet and public welcome to mark the occasion. On Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m., the Varsity Girls Swim Team will host Livonia, and Superintendent Nicholas Ganster will offer remarks.
The closure of the pool affected various programs, including those for students, the community, law enforcement, and local organizations like the YMCA and Phelps Community Center. Student-athletes, such as State qualifier Ethan Brodman, had to travel to other schools to continue training during the closure. However, no new information about the impact on these individuals and groups was provided.
In a move to expedite the repairs, the Board of Education declared a local emergency and approved up to $2.5 million in repairs. The state will reimburse nearly 88% of the cost over 15 years, but no new information about this reimbursement or the local emergency declaration was provided.
From July 14 to August 8, the district offered swim lessons, open swims, water aerobics, and lap swimming at the reopened Midlakes Aquatic Center. In their first meet of the season, the Varsity Girls Swim Team beat Palmyra-Macedon. Mattea Brodman won two events and qualified for Sectionals, while Maeve Jankowski and Ava Erb also earned personal bests and qualifying times.
The public is welcome to attend the Midlakes Aquatic Center Reopening on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m. It's a chance to experience the improvements firsthand and support the local swim teams. Let's make the most of this revitalized community resource!
