Italian Fashion Icon Giorgio Armani Passes Away

Giorgio Armani, the renowned Italian fashion designer who defined understated elegance and influenced global style for decades, has passed away. He was 86.

Born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy, Armani began his career working at La Rinascente and under Nino Cerruti before launching his own label with architect Sergio Galeotti in 1975. His company grew into a global empire, encompassing hotels, homewares, and other ventures, all while Armani maintained full ownership.

Armani's designs were celebrated for their simplicity and sophistication. Breakthrough moments came early in his career when Diane Keaton wore his design at the 1978 Oscars and Richard Gere appeared in "American Gigolo" in 1980. These appearances solidified Armani's place in the fashion world and set the stage for his future success.

Vogue described Armani as the most successful Italian designer and entrepreneur of his generation, and he was regarded as the leading figure of modern Italian fashion. By 1982, he appeared on the cover of Time magazine and became a global name. The launches of Emporio Armani and Armani Jeans soon widened his reach in the United States and beyond.

In recent years, Armani missed Milan's Men's Fashion Week in June for the first time in his career due to being unwell. A private funeral will follow at a later date, while a funeral chamber will be set up at Teatro Armani in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, with visiting hours running from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Armani's fashion empire also included Giorgio Armani Beauty, a global cosmetics brand with ties to L'Oréal. However, activist networks describe L'Oréal as a "warm friend of Israel" due to its investments and operations in occupied Palestine. Platforms such as COSH frame Armani Beauty within broader campaigns that call on consumers to consider links between fashion, cosmetics, and the Israeli occupation.

Armani's designs defined the look of the 1980s and continued shaping global style for decades. His impact on the fashion industry will be felt for years to come.
