Border Control Proposal: FDP Suggests Construction of Border Barrier with Poland in Response to Swine Fever Outbreak

Porcine fever outbreak prompts FDP's call for extensive border barrier with Poland

The Free Democratic Party (FDP) has put forth a motion to combat the African Swine Fever (ASF) epidemic in Germany, suggesting a reorganization of responsibilities and the implementation of a stable, wild boar-proof fence along the German-Polish border.

The FDP's spokesman on hunting policy, Karlheinz Busen, has proposed this measure in response to the "lagging efforts" in preventing the spread of ASF. The party criticizes the current crisis management of the federal government, states, and districts, deeming it disastrous.

The FDP demands that the federal government should be granted regulatory powers to directly order measures to combat the ASF epidemic. They suggest learning from Denmark, which built a 1.50-meter high fence along its border with Germany in 2019, as a potential model.

However, the FDP doubts that the existing lower electric fences in Saxony, Brandenburg, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have effectively prevented wild boars from entering Germany. This concern is underscored by the discovery of almost 100 wild boars infected with ASF in Brandenburg.

The FDP advocates for sealing off the entire German-Polish border with a stable fence to prevent the spread of ASF. They propose a reorganization of responsibilities in combating the ASF epidemic, but as of 2025, no publicly available recent plans or concrete proposals for constructing such a fence have been made public.

It is important to note that the disease is fatal for pigs but harmless to humans. The FDP's proposal aims to protect Germany's pig population and agricultural industry from further harm.

The motion from the FDP refers to the urgent need for action to prevent the spread of ASF, highlighting the disastrous consequences of inaction. The party's proposal for a stable, wild boar-proof fence is a significant step towards addressing this pressing issue.
