Portugal Federation Responds to Allegations of Cristiano Ronaldo Threatening to Leave World Cup Team Following Benching

In the ongoing FIFA World Cup, Portugal is set to face Morocco in the quarter-final match this Saturday. Despite recent speculation, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has categorically denied that Cristiano Ronaldo is considering leaving the World Cup team.

The controversy surrounding Ronaldo and trainer Fernando Santos seems to have subsided, as the FPF considers Ronaldo's appearance in the match against Switzerland as a further demonstration of his commitment to the national team. However, the details of any supposed discussion between Ronaldo and Santos regarding his potential departure from the squad remain unclear.

Ronaldo was unexpectedly dropped from the starting lineup for the last 16 clash against Switzerland. Despite this, he participated in a spa session alongside the starters. The FPF stated that Ronaldo is continuously setting unique records in service of the national team, making him the most-capped Portuguese player and the top men's international goalscorer of all time.

In the match against Switzerland, Goncalo Ramos, who replaced Ronaldo, scored a hat-trick, leading Portugal to a resounding 6-1 victory. It is possible that Ramos may again get the nod over Ronaldo in the upcoming quarter-final match against Morocco. Ronaldo did not train with the backups on Wednesday after the game against Switzerland.

The FPF has maintained a positive stance towards Ronaldo, emphasising his significant contributions to the team. Despite the recent controversy, it appears that Ronaldo will continue to play a crucial role in Portugal's World Cup journey.
