Chris Froome, the four-time Tour de France champion, has been involved in a severe training accident last week near Saint-Raphaël in southern France. The incident occurred last Wednesday, and the cyclist was airlifted to Toulon hospital for immediate treatment.

According to reports, Froome collided with a traffic sign at over 45 kilometers per hour, resulting in multiple injuries. He sustained a lumbar spine fracture, five broken ribs, and a pneumothorax, a condition where air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall.

During his operation, doctors found that Froome had a torn pericardium, caused by blunt chest trauma. This potentially life-threatening heart injury required immediate attention.

Froome's wife, Michelle, has confirmed that his recovery will be long, and he won't be able to ride a bike for a while. This unfortunate incident means that Froome will not compete in this year's races due to his injuries.

This is not the first time Froome has been involved in a serious accident. In 2019, just before the Tour, he was also injured.

Froome, who lives in Monaco, underwent surgery following the accident, and his condition was initially diagnosed after the crash. His contract expires at the end of the current season, and speculation about the future of his career has arisen.

Interestingly, another sports figure, Schlickenrieder, the German cross-country skiing chief, is currently hospitalised due to a crash on a mountain, adding to the concern for the well-being of athletes in high-speed sports.

As Froome recovers, the cycling community and fans worldwide wish him a speedy and full recovery. His impact on the sport, with four Tour de France wins, is undeniable, and many hope to see him back on the road soon.
