Predicted apple crop to remain standard following cold growing season for farmers - Predicted apple crop yield presumed normal following a year of frosty conditions
Thuringia, a region known for its fruit production, is expected to have a normal apple harvest this year, according to industry experts. Michael Bley, the CEO of Fahner Obst in Gierstädt, Thuringia's largest apple growing operation, shares this optimistic outlook.
Bley attributes the expected normal harvest to the absence of a late frost this year, a factor that caused significant losses in 2022. However, hail damage was reported in some areas during the apple harvest, though it was not severe enough to jeopardise the overall harvest.
Fahner Obst, based in Gierstädt, cultivates around 900 hectares of apples. Bley is content with the size of the apples in this year's harvest, though he did not provide specific numbers. Hail insurance covered part of the loss caused by hail damage this year.
Last year's apple harvest suffered a significant loss, with yields per hectare dropping by 85 percent compared to 2023. The state provided financial aid to fruit growers due to the severe harvest losses.
Joachim Lissner, the managing director of the state association for horticulture, also describes the apple harvest as normal. He highlights that the good harvest this year is crucial for Thuringian fruit growers to enter the next year stably. Lissner also oversees a larger growing area in Kindelbrück (Sömmerda district), as well as smaller operations in eastern Thuringia.
After severe harvest losses last year, Thuringian fruit growers are looking more optimistically at the current apple harvest. Bley is satisfied with the situation, stating, "We are in a much better position this year compared to last year."
The apple harvest will continue until late October. Despite the hail damage in some areas, overall, Thuringian orchards expect a very good apple harvest in 2025.
