Preference of Baltic Citizens Towards Harris as US President, According to Recent Survey Results

A recent survey by pollster Kantar Emor shows a preference for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the upcoming US presidential election among residents of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

The polling firm looked into the voting preferences and sentiments of Baltic citizens regarding the upcoming US election. About half (49%) of respondents in Estonia, 50% in Latvia, and a whopping 70% in Lithuania expressed support for Harris. In comparison, around 30% of Estonian and Latvian respondents remained neutral, while 25% of Latvians and 20% of Estonians favored Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Interestingly, ethnic Estonians showed a clear preference for Harris, with 66% endorsing her candidacy and 16% supporting Trump. However, among other nationalities, 47% were neutral, with 27% supporting Harris and 25% backing Trump. Aivar Voog, Kantar Emor’s lead researcher, explained that the starker support for Harris in Lithuania could be due to the lower percentage of residents belonging to other nationalities compared to Estonia and Latvia.

Voog also noted that political preferences significantly influenced attitudes towards the presidential candidates. Supporters of the Reform Party generally favored Harris, but preferences among three other parties varied. For instance, 70% of EKRE and Estonian Nationalists and Conservatives supported Trump, while Center Party supporters tended to prefer Trump over Harris. Contrastingly, supporters of Isamaa, a conservative party, overwhelmingly favored Harris.

The survey also found that half of the respondents in all three Baltic countries believe Harris will win the election. Around one-fifth backed Trump, while fewer still thought the election wouldn't impact their country’s economy, trade, or peace (less than 5%).

Regarding US aid to Ukraine, the majority in Estonia (48%), Latvia (43%), and Lithuania (49%) confirmed that assistance should be increased. National differences were observed, with ethnic Estonians supporting aid increase (61%) and non-ethnic respondents favoring a reduction (41%).

Residents across the Baltic states generally agreed that the US presidential election would affect their country’s economy, trade, and peace. They believed that the US’s global position would weaken if Trump were elected, while it would remain strong or strengthen under Harris's presidency.

The data is based on an online survey conducted between September 19 to 26, with a total of 3,160 respondents aged 16 and over from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
