Prehistoric settlement Mendik Tepe discovered in Turkey, dating back to the Neolithic period, suggests an earlier existence compared to Gobeklitepe.
In the rural Payamli area of Eyyubiye, Sanliurfa, an intriguing archaeological site named Mendik Tepe is currently undergoing excavations. This Neolithic site, discovered by researchers in Turkey, is part of the Tas Tepeler (Stone Mounds) Project and is being led by Professor Douglas Baird of the University of Liverpool's Department of Archaeology.
The ongoing excavations at Mendik Tepe have revealed a multitude of structures of varying sizes. The most notable is a large structure, characterised by robust and meticulous stonework, which suggests it may have been built for ritual purposes. Smaller structures may have served for storage or food preparation, mid-sized ones could have been dwellings, and larger ones may have housed domestic or ritual activities.
Mendik Tepe appears to predate other Tas Tepeler settlements such as Gobeklitepe and Karahantepe. Unlike its counterparts, Mendik Tepe's standing stones are not T-shaped, marking a distinct architectural character for the site.
Archaeologists have also unearthed similar dates at Cakmaktepe, around 5 kilometers (3 miles) away. This discovery further adds to the intrigue surrounding Mendik Tepe and its significance during the Neolithic period.
The material found at Mendik Tepe could potentially help evaluate evidence about the shift into settled life during the Neolithic period. The Sanliurfa Archaeology Museum and the British Institute of Archaeology are also involved in the excavations, contributing to a collaborative effort to unravel the mysteries of this ancient site.
As the excavations continue, the secrets of Mendik Tepe are slowly being revealed, offering valuable insights into the Neolithic period and the early days of human civilisation.
