Premiere figurehead in Bremen's robust coffee sector
In the heart of Bremen, Germany, lies the Coffein Compagnie, a global powerhouse in the decaffeination of coffee beans. This company, headquartered in Bremen-Hemelingen, processes approximately 120,000 metric tons of coffee annually, making it a world market leader.
The Coffein Compagnie's extensive premises in Bremen house five plants, where coffee beans are transported through pipes into silos and into the technical facilities using compressed air. This innovative method ensures a smooth and efficient process.
The company's roots can be traced back to the domestic market, but it has since expanded its reach to European countries and the United States. Today, the United States stands as the most important trading partner for the Coffein Compagnie. Around half of the coffee beans consumed daily throughout Germany come from companies based in Bremen.
The Coffein Compagnie caters to both small and large roasters with decaffeinated coffee, as well as green coffee traders. In response to the growing demand for organic products, Jana Köster, a process engineer in process development, introduced a certified organic decaffeination process at the company.
Jens W. Eckhoff, the managing director of the Coffein Compagnie, emphasizes the company's commitment to Bremen. He believes that the suitable infrastructure and logistics in the city provide a strategic advantage. Despite his busy schedule, Eckhoff maintains a personal habit of consuming caffeinated coffee in the morning and decaffeinated in the afternoon to avoid sleep difficulties.
The shift towards a mindful lifestyle has seen more and more young people switching to decaffeinated coffee. In the 1990s, the share of decaffeinated coffee in Germany's total coffee consumption was around 14 percent. Today, that figure stands at four percent. However, the trend suggests a promising future for the decaffeinated coffee market.
The Coffein Compagnie's global footprint extends beyond its Bremen site, with additional production facilities in Vietnam and Italy, and offices in the United States and Colombia. Around 6,000 containers go in and out of the Bremen site annually, bringing in raw coffee from all over the world for processing.
As the global leader in decaffeinating coffee, the Coffein Compagnie continues to innovate and adapt to the changing coffee market, ensuring it remains at the forefront of the industry.
