Preserving fan recollections from the Sunderland Football Club history
A fascinating new research project is underway, and Sunderland football club fans are invited to take part. This project, part of the Coals to Goals project at the Foundation of Light, is a collaboration between Durham University and the Foundation of Light, funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The research project, led by Professor Stacey Pope, aims to capture fans' memories of the club, specifically from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. The leader of the research project, involving Professor Stacey Pope and Dr. Kevin Moore, is Dr. Emma Brown.
The researchers are particularly interested in hearing from women fans of the club, but all fans are welcome to share their experiences. Informal conversations can take place in the interviewee's home, at the Foundation of Light, or over the phone. Interviewees have the option to remain anonymous if they wish.
The recordings from the interviews will be used for research at Durham University and by the Foundation of Light. The researchers are seeking memories about the first game attended, initial impressions of Roker Park, favourite players, and the FA Cup triumph in 1973.
If you're interested in participating, you can contact Dr Kevin Moore for more information. You can email kevin.c.moore@our website.uk or call 07711 831410.
The Sport and Exercise Sciences department at Durham University offers opportunities for study, and more information about the department can be found on their webpages. This project is just one example of the exciting research happening at Durham University, exploring the rich history and culture of Sunderland football club.
