President Trump speaks on health speculations amidst extended absence from public engagements
In a week marked by speculation and rumours, former President Donald Trump found himself at the centre of a health-related storm.
The past has shown that Trump has been less than transparent about his health, with the 2015 hyperbolic letter from his doctor claiming him to be "the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency" being a notable example. However, recent events have once again brought his health into question.
Over the weekend, Trump was at his golf course, but this did not stop the social media rumour mill from churning. Fueled by political opponents, speculation about Trump's health was rife, with some pointing to recent visible signs such as bruising on the back of his right hand and swelling around his ankles.
Despite these concerns, Trump maintained his usual active lifestyle, stating that he was "very active over the weekend." He gave interviews and posted on Truth Social, his social media platform, during the days he was not appearing publicly.
In response to the speculation, Trump labelled it as "fake news" and claimed that he "NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE." However, he did acknowledge that there were concerns about his health, stating that he was not aware of the rumours but had heard them.
At his first public event in a week, Trump was asked about his health by Fox News' Peter Doocy. The senators and administration officials gathered around Trump for the Space Command headquarters announcement shifted their weight and smiled when the question was posed.
Trump's health situation in 2020, during his COVID-19 illness, was serious enough to require hospitalization at Walter Reed Medical Center. He received treatments including remdesivir and dexamethasone, and showed fluctuating symptoms. However, he recovered after several days without requiring intensive care.
It was later revealed that the president was much sicker than the White House let on during his hospitalization. The bruising on Trump's right hand is due to frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, providing some insight into his daily activities.
In the face of these health concerns, Trump's transparency remains a topic of discussion, with many calling for more open communication about his health status.
