Jake Li, a Drexel University and Cornell Law School graduate, has taken on a new role as Vice President for Biodiversity Policy with Defenders of Wildlife. In this new position, Li will be critiquing decisions made by the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), an organisation that is currently facing significant challenges.

The FWS has been tasked with convening the Emergency Committee known as the "God Squad" under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). However, the Service is struggling to meet its legal deadlines due to the reduced workforce and a budget cut of approximately 20%.

One of the tasks imposed on the FWS is to secure a reliable critical mineral supply. Additionally, the Service is being pressed to expedite energy development on federal lands.

Li, who was previously the Assistant Director of the FWS's Endangered Species Program, has expressed sympathy for the career employees of the Service and is concerned about their future. He questions how the Service can continue functioning with its current challenges.

Li's comments were made in an interview, where he also expressed his support for the career employees of the FWS and his hope for their continued success in protecting endangered species.
