Primary school reintroduces 'Alam dan Manusia' curriculum for students
A university professor from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Effendi Ewan Matore, has expressed his support for the introduction of a new core subject for Level 1 primary pupils: "Alam dan Manusia: Integrated Learning". This subject is part of a new six-core subject framework designed for these pupils.
The other subjects in the new framework are Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Islamic or Moral Education, and Physical Education. Notably, the new framework does not include additional or elective subjects such as Mandarin, Tamil, or Arabic.
Othman, who was not identified, proposed that "Alam dan Manusia" should be based on phenomena around the pupils and integrated with art and music. Effendi echoed this sentiment, suggesting that children at Level 1 should learn through their surroundings to foster sensitivity and awareness of the environment.
"Alam dan Manusia" was first introduced in 1982 under the Integrated Curriculum for Primary Schools (KBSR). However, it was replaced by a combination of Science and Kajian Tempatan in 1994. Its reintroduction as a separate subject has been met with enthusiasm, particularly from Effendi, who emphasised the human elements in this subject as particularly meaningful in shaping the character of Level 1 primary pupils.
Othman expressed satisfaction with the six core subjects for Level 1 pupils, specifically mentioning the reintroduction of "Alam dan Manusia". He also suggested increasing the time allocated for Bahasa Melayu and Mathematics, emphasising the impact of literacy and numeracy on achievement in other subjects.
Effendi further highlighted that the subject incorporates many elements of science and helps students appreciate nature, history, culture, and society. He commented on a Facebook post about the subject, stating that it provides a holistic approach to learning that goes beyond the traditional subject-based curriculum.
The university professor who enthusiastically supported the introduction of "Alam dan Manusia: Integrated Learning" as a new core subject for the student's first grade remains unnamed. Level 1 pupils currently take these subjects, plus either Music or Visual Arts.
The focus on content, assessment, and pedagogy, rather than the number of subjects, is a key aspect of the new framework. This approach aims to ensure that the curriculum is effective and engaging for the pupils, fostering a love for learning and a deep understanding of the world around them.
