Prime Minister Modi Honors Late Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand on National Sports Day 2025

On August 29, India celebrated National Sports Day, an annual occasion that honours Major Dhyan Chand, the "Wizard of Hockey," and recognises the achievements of athletes in various sports. This year's theme was "Sport to Promote Peaceful and Inclusive Societies."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to the occasion to highlight the transformation in India's sports ecosystem over the last decade, expressing his appreciation for the strides made in promoting fitness, inclusivity, and global recognition for Indian sports. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to these values, emphasising its support for athletes and the goal of making India a global hub for sporting excellence.

Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, who replaced Shivraj Singh Chouhan as the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the Minister of Rural Development this year, paid tribute to Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary. Chouhan, in his absence, had previously expressed numerous salutations and posted his tribute on platform X.

The day is not just about celebrating past achievements but also encouraging the youth to pursue excellence in sports. National Sports Day emphasises the role of sports in promoting unity and excellence, fostering a culture of fitness and inclusivity.
