In a significant move for the freight industry, Trimble's Freight Marketplace has secured its first major shipper customer: Procter & Gamble. This new offering, now operational, is set to revolutionise the way freight procurement is handled, particularly for large and medium-sized shippers.

The Freight Marketplace, based on the Transporeon platform, offers a contractual-type arrangement for term freight contracts, moving away from the traditional spot load platform. It is designed specifically for shippers, not traditional load boards, and handles strategic RFQs and mini-bids or mini-RFQs.

One of the key advantages of the Freight Marketplace is its low financial barrier to entry for shippers. With no initial costs, shippers can try the platform for one event at a time, facilitating a gradual adoption process. When a shipper signs up, they are assigned a "post-sale consultant" for support during the initial phase.

Procter & Gamble, in its adoption, brought approximately 150 of their approved carriers to the Freight Marketplace. The process to sign up a new shipper can take several months, but Trimble expects a steady stream of announcements for new shippers signing up for the platform.

Notably, the financial structure of the Freight Marketplace requires carriers, approved by shippers, to pay $100 per month to be on the site, with some free transactions during an introductory period. The remaining 250 carriers on the Freight Marketplace came from early users who migrated from the Transporeon system.

Trimble's acquisition of Transporeon, a European freight matching company, in 2023, has played a crucial role in the development of the Freight Marketplace. Transporeon's platform already boasts over 7,000 carriers, shippers, and brokers operating in Europe.

With Procter & Gamble using the Freight Marketplace as their primary procurement mechanism for monthly freight needs, it is clear that the Freight Marketplace is poised to become a significant player in the freight industry. The platform operates as a website, not an app, but it has an interface for integrating data and information into transportation management systems.

Negotiations for deals can take place online, unlike traditional load boards, making the Freight Marketplace a convenient and efficient solution for shippers and carriers alike. As more shippers adopt the Freight Marketplace, it is expected that the platform will continue to grow and reshape the freight industry.
