Production of Toyota RAV4 vehicles temporarily ceases in Japan due to catastrophic explosion at manufacturing partner's facility.

In a surprising turn of events, Toyota Motor Corp. has announced the suspension of local production of the RAV4 SUV due to an explosion at a supplier plant in Japan. The incident occurred at the Chuo Spring facility in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, which is operated by Chuo Spring Co., Ltd.

The explosion, which took place inside the Chuo Spring facility, produces suspension springs, precision springs, and cables used in parking brakes and automatic transmissions. Regrettably, at least one person was killed, and two others were injured in the incident.

Despite the disruption in Japan, Toyota's production operations in Georgetown, Kentucky, will remain unaffected. The RAV4 SUV will continue to be produced at the facility in Georgetown, ensuring the popular vehicle's availability in the U.S. market.

The spokesperson for Toyota confirmed the suspension via email to Automotive Dive, stating that they are currently working to resume production in Japan following the explosion. However, they declined to provide additional details on how the incident will impact Toyota's vehicle manufacturing operations.

The RAV4 SUV had a successful year in 2024, with sales showing a 9% improvement from the previous year. In fact, the RAV4 was the best-selling vehicle in the U.S., selling 475,193 units.

Despite the temporary production halt in Japan, Toyota remains committed to delivering quality vehicles to its customers. The company will undoubtedly take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of its workers and the resumption of production as soon as possible.
