Brew masters readying for the World Cup in Munich - Professionals in beer tasting gear up for the World Cup in Munich
In the upcoming Beer World Cup, taking place in Munich this weekend, Germany is one of the favourites to take the title. The nation has previously won the tournament four times.
Preparations for the event have been intense, with the German national team going to training camp twice and regularly meeting for online blind tastings to improve their sensory skills.
But who are these beer experts that make up the German team? They are none other than beer sommeliers, individuals who unlock the world of beer for connoisseurs, gastronomes, and the entire industry.
Beer sommeliers are experts who examine factors like colour, foam, turbidity, and identify the type of beer during a blind tasting. Their focus is on understanding the beer rather than consuming large amounts. In fact, during training, they taste through multiple beers but do not drink large quantities.
The role of a beer sommelier extends beyond just tasting beers. They also possess knowledge about economic and historical aspects of beer. In the future, it is possible to find a beer sommelier in restaurants who can recommend the perfect beer to go with a meal, similar to how wine is matched with food in better restaurants.
The beer industry is currently facing high costs and weak consumer sentiment, as stated by the managing director of the German Brewers' Association (DBB). Despite this, many breweries are expanding their portfolio and offering more varieties, including alcohol-free beer.
Beer sommeliers are seen as potential ambassadors for the industry. They are driven by passion rather than money, according to Blickhan. Schönram brewery's sommelier, Oliver Klamminger, is a prime example. He won bronze among 93 sommeliers from 18 countries at a recent event.
The German national team consists of 16 men and 3 women. With their extensive training and expertise, they feel well prepared for the World Cup. Six beer sommeliers will be in the final and will present the beer, similar to an art gallery presenting a work of art.
For those interested in becoming a beer sommelier, a two-week intensive course is available. It's a unique opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of beer and potentially become an ambassador for the industry.
