Profile of Student: Alexandria Herr, Class of 2017!
In the hallowed halls of Princeton University, a student named Alex Herr is making a name for himself with his diverse research interests. A member of the class of 2017, Herr is tentatively majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, with plans to earn certificates in Computer Science and Latin American Studies.
Herr's academic pursuits have taken him on an exciting journey, from the ancient civilisations of Egypt to the modern-day experiences of his students in the US. One of his most notable projects involved an interview and transcription of an oral history, focusing on the experiences of a student at El Centro.
In the realm of journalism, research often requires a slightly different toolbox. Along with a notebook and recorder, Herr has honed the skills necessary to get people's contact information, check the spelling of proper nouns, and navigate the ethical questions that other research projects may not entail.
This journalistic approach was evident in two of Herr's recent pieces, where he ventured to a detention center and a local Princeton pick-up spot for day laborers.
Herr's academic journey isn't limited to journalism, however. In FRS 187: Earth's Environments and Ancient Civilizations, he and a partner embarked on an exciting project in Cyprus. They collected samples from gypsum deposits, polished them, and took high-resolution photographs. Using a program to analyse the RGB levels of pixels along a cross section of the photos, they were able to count the distinct layers in the gypsum.
This project in archaeology isn't the only time Herr has delved into the past. In Ancient Egyptian Archaeology, he was assigned a number of scarabs and had to identify where they were from and whether they were real. One of these scarabs, which was listed as a fake, was able to make an argument for its authenticity.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Herr is currently teaching ESL to local workers every week at El Centro. This commitment to community engagement is a testament to Herr's dedication to making a positive impact, both in and out of the classroom.
While the details of Herr's current project at Princeton University remain undisclosed, one thing is certain: his academic journey is far from over. With his diverse interests and commitment to excellence, it's clear that Alex Herr is a student to watch.
