Progress of Gulf Cooperation Council Nations in the Global Circular Carbon Economy Ranking
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has shown significant progress in its efforts to transition towards a low-carbon economy and improve its performance in emission-mitigation technologies.
In a notable development, the GCC's Performance Index score saw a substantial increase from 29.7 in 2023 to 35.8 in 2024. This rise indicates a more concerted effort by the GCC nations to embrace sustainable practices and prepare for a future powered by low-carbon technologies.
The GCC's commitment to the energy transition was further reaffirmed by the Supreme Council of the GCC. The council has been instrumental in guiding the region's approach to sustainable development and renewable energy.
Investment in hydrocarbons has not been overlooked, with the GCC continuing to invest sustainably in this sector. However, the region has also made significant strides in renewable energy. The GCC's share of global installed design capacity for renewable energy rose from a mere 0.03 percent in 2015 to a more substantial 0.43 percent in 2024.
The Enablers Index for the GCC also saw an increase, rising from 45.6 in 2023 to 47.2 in 2024. This index measures the enabling environment for the transition to a low-carbon economy, including factors such as policy, regulation, and infrastructure.
The GCC is also advancing the four pillars of the Circular Carbon Economy framework: reduce, reuse, recycle, and remove. This approach emphasises the importance of waste reduction and the efficient use of resources in the region's transition to a low-carbon economy.
The Circular Carbon Economy Index for the Gulf Cooperation Council also saw a rise, increasing from 37.7 in 2023 to 41.5 in 2024. However, the specific GCC countries with the highest rankings in the 2024 Circular Carbon Economy Index for the Middle East and North Africa region could not be identified in the available search results.
Despite this, the overall trend suggests that the GCC is making steady progress in its journey towards a more sustainable future. The region's commitment to the energy transition, investment in renewable energy, and focus on the Circular Carbon Economy framework are all positive signs for the future of the GCC's low-carbon economy.
