Promising increased model offerings and improved customer service, the new head of BYD Australia asserts ambitions to become a recognized frontrunner across all fields.

BYD Australia, the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has taken a significant step forward in its journey with the takeover of its business from independent outfit EVDirect, officially announced on July 21. This move is expected to further boost the brand's popularity and accelerate its growth.

Under the new factory-owned distributor structure, Stephen Collins now leads the BYD vehicle business in Australia. As the Chief Operating Officer, Collins is focused on making BYD a leader in every respect within 5 or less years. He aims to ensure that BYD Australia excels not just in sales, but also in areas such as customer experience, delivery, and servicing.

The rapid expansion of sales has put pressure on delivery and servicing, but BYD Australia is equally focused on these aspects. The company is investing locally in parts warehousing and logistics to ensure long-term, sustainable success. The new factory-takeover aims to reduce wait times on certain popular models, ensuring a smoother customer experience.

The primary drivers of BYD's year-on-year sales increase of 144% are the Sealion 6 PHEV SUV, the Shark 6 PHEV dual cab ute, and the Sealion 7 EV. These models have been instrumental in propelling BYD Australia up the sales rankings. In 2022, the company was ranked 37 in sales, improving to 22 in 2023, and climbing further to 16 in 2024.

BYD Australia's expansion plans include growing its sales network to 50 dealerships by the end of 2026. Four new models, including the BYD Atto 2 compact electric SUV and BYD Sealion 8 three-row PHEV SUV, are set to launch by early 2026, further fueling the brand's growth.

In addition to its main brand, BYD's luxury brand Denza is also set to launch in Australia. The local brand chief for Denza will also report to Wing You, reflecting BYD Australia's commitment to its luxury offerings.

Smitherman's forecast of 50,000 sales for BYD Australia by the end of the year is well within reach. The company aims to continue on a similar trajectory and aims to be well and truly in the top 10 by the end of this year. With Collins' vision and the company's aggressive expansion plans, it seems that BYD Australia is poised for greatness.
