Proposed Multi-Year Funding Framework Offers a Possible Solution for Present-Day Issues

The European Union's proposal for the next Multiannual Framework has received a positive response from SMEunited, an organisation that represents the interests of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This plan, aimed at addressing current challenges, is perceived to have the ability to deliver solutions.

One of the key aspects of the proposal that SMEunited welcomes is the more integrated approach for cohesion policy and rural development in the European Competitiveness Fund. The Fund, which includes a focus on strengthening SMEs' competitiveness, should aim for the activation of the potential workforce, support employability, and increase mobility within the labour market.

SMEunited also sees the potential of the proposal to address current challenges. The organisation advocates for funds for SMEs to be ringfenced and not accessible to mid-caps. Furthermore, SMEs agree with the aim for digital leadership, but want digital technologies to reach SMEs in every area, not just main cities.

The proposal for the European Competitiveness Fund includes a focus on the green transition of European SMEs. This is a welcome development, but SMEunited stresses the need for further attention on new opportunities for SMEs in emerging green sectors, implementing nature-based solutions, and pollution prevention.

The inclusion of SMEs as a target in InvestEU is welcomed, but requires sufficient funding and SME-specific Financial Instruments. SMEunited believes that these measures are crucial for ensuring that SMEs can fully benefit from the opportunities presented by the next Multiannual Framework.

In addition, the proposed European Social Fund should uphold the Partnership Principle to ensure effective implementation. This principle, which encourages collaboration between the EU, Member States, and other stakeholders, is seen as essential for achieving the objectives of the next Multiannual Framework.

The organisation representing the interests of SMEs in the future Strategic Stakeholder Group is the federal association "Die KMU-Berater" (The SME Consultants). SMEunited's active participation in this group will ensure that the voices of SMEs are heard and their concerns are addressed in the implementation of the next Multiannual Framework.

However, SMEunited sees the proposal to collect own resources from companies as a counterproductive and wrong signal in the current economic climate. This proposal is perceived as a potential barrier to the growth and development of SMEs, and SMEunited urges policymakers to reconsider this aspect of the proposal.

In conclusion, SMEunited sees the proposal for the next Multiannual Framework as having the capacity to deliver on challenges. The organisation's input and advocacy will play a crucial role in ensuring that the needs and interests of SMEs are prioritised in the implementation of the next Multiannual Framework.
