Prospects of Augsburg City
In the heart of Bavaria, the city of Augsburg is taking a proactive approach to shaping its future. The "Future Guidelines for Augsburg," a comprehensive blueprint for sustainable development, has been at the forefront of this effort since its adoption in 2015.
The guidelines, developed through a city society process and subsequently endorsed by the city council, consist of 78 goals divided into four dimensions: Ecological Future Viability, Social Future Viability, Economic Future Viability, and additional unspecified dimensions. Each dimension encompasses five guidelines.
The Ecological Future Viability guidelines aim to protect the climate, enable ecological mobility for all, improve energy and material efficiency, protect and promote biological diversity, and preserve natural living conditions. The Social Future Viability guidelines, on the other hand, strive to enable a healthy life, live holistic education, live safely, enable participation in society, and create social balance. The Economic Future Viability guidelines aim to strengthen the location, connect living and working, operate in the interest of the common good, generate and use finances sustainably, and develop and design areas and buildings sustainably.
Since 2017, city council resolutions have been reviewed using a "Sustainability Assessment" based on the Future Guidelines. This rigorous process ensures that the city's decisions align with its long-term sustainability goals.
To facilitate discussions about the current challenges of the future, the "Augsburg Future Box" was introduced in 2022. Designed as an analog-digital future vision game, it serves as a valuable tool for schools and other educational institutions, fostering informed conversations about Augsburg's sustainable development.
The third Augsburg Sustainability Report on the "Future Guidelines for Augsburg" was published in 2025, providing a comprehensive overview of the city's progress towards its sustainability goals. The report contains 88 indicators, offering a detailed analysis of the city's performance in each dimension of the Future Guidelines.
The implementation of the Future Guidelines is a collaborative effort involving civil society, economy, city politics, and city administration.
