Protective Measures for Avian Species

The Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum in Düsseldorf has joined forces with the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) in the "Silent Forest Campaign," an initiative launched in 2017 to protect endangered songbird species in Asian rainforests.

The campaign, which runs until September 10th, has gained significant support from the community, with many citizens donating binoculars to aid the cause. So far, 115 pairs of binoculars have been collected at the Aquazoo, located at Kaiserswerther Straße 380.

The binoculars, donated daily between 10 am and 6 pm, will be used to equip rangers and school classes in Asia, helping to monitor deforestation and illegal bird trading. Deforestation for palm oil cultivation poses a significant threat to songbirds, and illegally captured birds are often sold on local markets as pets or status symbols, leading to many species disappearing from the wild.

Guided bird walks are also part of the campaign, aimed at inspiring people to care about the birds and their protection. On September 8th, an action day for the "Silent Forest Campaign" will take place at the Aquazoo, offering both adults and children the opportunity to learn more about the initiative and participate in interactive activities.

Düsseldorf leads all European zoos participating in the "Silent Forest Campaign" in terms of binocular donations, closely followed by Zoo Copenhagen. The collection drive for old, discarded binoculars is not limited to the Aquazoo, but is a Europe-wide effort.
