First Christopher Street Day in Balingen Celebrates Queerness on the Swabian Alb

For the first time, the city of Balingen in the Zollernalb district hosted the Christopher Street Day (CSD) event. Approximately 400 participants took part in the colourful demonstration that peacefully marched through the city streets.

The event began with a warm welcome from the "Friendship Circle against the Right Balingen," who greeted travellers with music and speeches before the official CSD event began. The "immerwaslos" association and the Jusos Zollernalb also participated in the demonstration.

The location for the stage program was the market square in Balingen, where various local associations and organisations, including the Feuervogel Zollernalbkreis, actively participated. The demonstration on the market square also included a stage program.

The city streets were the location for the demonstration march, which proceeded peacefully from start to finish, with police present but not needing to intervene. The participants expressed their joy that queerness could now be celebrated on the Swabian Alb.

The organisers were pleased with the success of the first CSD in Balingen. For many, it was a significant step towards greater acceptance and visibility for the LGBTQ+ community in this conservative small town of about 35,000 inhabitants.

Despite the city administration and city council not flying a rainbow flag at the town hall during the CSD event, many participants brought their own colours to show their support. The "Friendship Circle against the Right Balingen" also supported the CSD at the train station in Balingen.

The first CSD in the Zollernalb district, held in Albstadt last year, had a larger police presence due to clashes between right-wing extremist and anti-fascist groups. However, this year's event in Balingen was a peaceful and joyful celebration of diversity and inclusivity.
