Push for Fairer Education Distribution Advocated in Germany's Schools
In the run-up to the upcoming school start in several German federal states, Michaela Engelmeier, CEO of the Social Association of Germany (SoVD), has called on political parties and organizations to take decisive action to increase educational equity.
Engelmeier, in a statement made to the Funke media group newspapers, emphasized the need for modern, barrier-free education and better working conditions in schools. She urged for more targeted offers for students, including free tutoring and support for disadvantaged children, regardless of their performance or background.
The SoVD's focus is on promoting educational justice and addressing inequalities. Engelmeier believes that education can break the cycle of poverty, but she is concerned about the unequal opportunities for children due to their economic backgrounds. According to her, while the majority of children start the new school year with well-equipped school bags, every fifth child grows up in poverty.
To achieve educational justice, Engelmeier demands more teaching staff to ensure effective education. She also advocates for barrier-free school buildings and inclusive learning environments. However, she did not specify what form decisive political action should take.
In addition to these measures, Engelmeier calls for better working conditions for school medical, psychological, and social and special pedagogical support staff. She supports increased investments in modern learning materials and digital equipment in schools.
Engelmeier reiterates that educational justice should not be just a lip service. She asserts that it is necessary for political action to address the dependence of children's educational success on parents' financial situations. The SoVD criticizes this dependence and urges for a fair, modern, and barrier-free education system for all children.
The school start in Saxony, Thuringia, and Saxony-Anhalt is imminent. As the new school year approaches, the SoVD's appeal to political parties and organizations to take action to increase educational equity and ensure a fair, modern, and barrier-free education system for all children grows increasingly urgent.
