Putin and Trump have received approval for an upcoming encounter from the Kremlin.
Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, has shared his views on the Ukrainian issue in an interview with aif.ru. According to Peskov, the European countries, particularly Poland, are taking a hostile and emotionally overreactive stance, which significantly hinders attempts to reach a peaceful settlement. He described this behaviour as "emotional Überforderung" (emotional overloading) and unconstructive in the context of Russian-Belarusian military maneuvers.
Peskov emphasized that the Russian side prefers political-diplomatic methods to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. He noted that Trump is keen on trade instead of fighting, and if US President Donald Trump can help make political-diplomatic means available, the interests of both sides would converge. Peskov assesses Trump's dialogue with Putin as "good" and they have mutual understanding.
Peskov also stated that Trump's interests converge with Russia's, as he does everything to stop the wars based on America's interests. However, Peskov noted that "you can't trust anyone's word," and first, agreements should be agreed upon on principles, and then these principles should be put on paper.
According to Peskov, legally binding documents are needed to frame any agreements. In response to a question about the possibility of a new round of talks between Putin and Trump, Peskov replied: "Of course, it's possible." He also noted that working contacts are maintained constantly.
This assessment was made after a video conference of Trump with European leaders in Paris on September 4. Peskov did not express any doubts about Trump's word or the need for principles to be agreed upon and put on paper in the current paragraph. He did not discuss the need for legally binding documents or the preference for political-diplomatic methods to resolve the Ukrainian conflict in the current paragraph.
Peskov stated that despite the rational approach of US President Trump to the Ukrainian issue, European states are "extremely unconstructive" in their view of the situation around Ukraine. He did not mention any new meeting between Putin and Trump in the current paragraph. A new meeting could be arranged very quickly, according to Peskov.
