Quarter-finals of FIVB World Championship see Turkish Sultans of Net encounter United States team
The women's national volleyball team of Türkiye, known as the "Sultans of the Net," are set to make history as they face the U.S. in the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship.
The match, scheduled for Thursday at the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, will see the Turkish team go up against the three-time Olympic gold medalists and defending Paris 2024 champions. However, Turkey's 3-1 victory over the Americans in the 2025 Volleyball Nations League semifinals adds a compelling narrative to this rematch.
Türkiye has been in impressive form, winning their last four matches in a row. They started their campaign with a 3-0 triumph over Egypt, followed by another 3-0 sweep against hosts Thailand, and concluded with a 3-0 win over Canada. In Group E, hosted in Phuket, Türkiye topped the standings with a perfect record, winning all their matches 3-0.
The Turkish team's success can be attributed to the expert orchestration of setter Cansu Özbay, the consistent defensive coverage provided by libero Gizem Örge, and the attacking aggression and lethal serving of Ebrar Karakurt. In their match against Slovenia, Melissa Vargas led the scoring with powerful spikes, while Eda Erdem Dündar anchored the defense with her blocking and leadership.
Veterans like Hande Baladın have combined seamlessly with younger talents on the Turkish team, demonstrating a balanced and formidable squad. Under the guidance of coach Giovanni Guidetti, who has led the team since 2006 and still leads them today, Türkiye has achieved its best successes at the World Championships.
The U.S. team, on the other hand, has been undefeated in pool play, showcasing tactical precision and athleticism. The team was led by opposite Annie Drews, middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu, and setter Jordyn Poulter in their victory over Canada.
Should Turkey prevail, they will face the winner of the Netherlands vs. Japan quarterfinal in the semifinals on Saturday in Bangkok. This encounter could be a historical moment for Türkiye, as a win would allow them to reach the semifinals of the World Championship for the first time.
The stage is set for an exciting quarterfinal match between two powerhouse teams. The "Sultans of the Net" will look to upset the favorites and make their mark on the world stage.
